Ill-Formed and Non-Standard Language Problems

چکیده
Prospects look good for making real improvements in Natural Language Processing systems with regard to dealing with unconventional inputs in a practical way. Research which is expected to have an influence on this progress as well as some predictions about accomplishments in both the short and long term are discussed.

Technical Correspondance - On The Need For Parsing Ill-Formed Input
Kwasny and Sondheimer (1981) present techniques for handling several types of ill-formed input within the context of augmented transition networks. Such approaches are necessary if natural language understanding systems are to handle the full range of input to be expected from users. We present here some statistics which illustrate the magnitude of this problem ; almost one third of the queries...
متن کاملParse Fitting and Prose Fixing: Getting a Hold on III-Formedness
Processing syntactically ill-formed language is an important mission of the EPISTLE system, lll-formed input is treated by this system in various ways. Misspellings are highlighted by a standard spelling checker; syntactic errors are detected and corrections are suggested; and stylistic infelicities are called to the user's attention. Central to the EPISTLE processing strategy is its technique ...
متن کاملContext Tailoring for Text Normalization
Language processing tools suffer from significant performance drops in social media domain due to its continuously evolving language. Transforming non-standard words into their standard forms has been studied as a step towards proper processing of ill-formed texts. This work describes a normalization system that considers contextual and lexical similarities between standard and non-standard wor...
متن کاملVariations in EFL Teachers’ Pedagogical Knowledge Base as a Function of Their Teaching License Status
The study of teachers’ pedagogical knowledge base (PKB) to discover how teachers think and work is attracting increasing attention in ELT. Against this background, the present study aimed at probing the likely variations in EFL teachers’ pedagogical knowledge base as a function of their teaching license status. To this aim, six teachers (two standard-licensed, two alternatively-licensed, and tw...
متن کاملHow Linguistic Chickens Help Spot Spoken-Eggs: Phonological Constraints on Speech Identification
It has long been known that the identification of aural stimuli as speech is context-dependent (Remez et al., 1981). Here, we demonstrate that the discrimination of speech stimuli from their non-speech transforms is further modulated by their linguistic structure. We gauge the effect of phonological structure on discrimination across different manifestations of well-formedness in two distinct l...
